Despite indications that Generative AI (GAI) responses to mathematical prompts are not yet robust, there is a notable progression in the technology's ability to provide more accurate and contextually relevant answers. Through a collection of example prompts and responses we demonstrate that GAI as a promising tool for educational support, contingent on careful scrutiny and responsible use by educators and learners. We will work with participants to generate additional questions to support real-time exploration of the potentials and limitations of GAI.

Trigonometry instruction typically begins by defining sine, cosine, and tangent as ratios. In this session, I share an alternative approach in which sine and cosine are introduced as coordinates on the unit circle, with tangent as an associated slope. This method enhances understanding, rapidly leading students to an intuitive grasp of trigonometric concepts.
I will share how students use this strategy to easily estimate the sine, cosine, or tangent of any angle and from there go on to derive various properties. I hope this leaves you with a new perspective on developing trigonometry with your students.

This session will chronicle our journey in developing and implementing a student portfolio focussed on the curricular competencies of perseverance and persistence in problem solving. Attendees will have an opportunity to experience the student process of developing a portfolio. We will also discuss how this portfolio was assessed, and provide a structure/template attendees can use and build on in their own classrooms.

This session is repeated on Saturday, October 26 from 8:30-9:45 am.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Large Language Models (LLM) have burst into the public eye over the past year. But how does this "intelligence" work, and is it going to lead to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) that will lead us to a brighter future? And what does it all have to do with plain old linear equations? (spoiler: everything) We will do some hands-on thinking about how LLMs and other neural networks actually work and how they relate to middle school and secondary mathematics topics, and then close off with some thoughts and discussion on how to understand the larger claims of AI with a critical lens.

Come on an algebraic journey as we see how bar models can be used to develop algebraic thinking from grade 4 to grade 9. We will solve puzzles, solve and make sense of 1- and 2-step equations and more complex equations, have a more intuitive understanding of the "rules" of algebra, and tackle tough word problems traditionally done with algebraic equations--all using bar models! If your students struggle to "get" algebra, then this session is for you! This is a hands-on session. Paper and pencils will be provided.

In this presentation, I share an activity of how I use a historical event, specifically the draining of a lake that occurred 100 years ago, which had profound implications on the Sumas nation and the surrounding environment to teach students mathematics. “In my math course, I was given examples of how algebraic thinking was used by many Indigenous people, and how I can utilize those same aspects in thinking. I now can understand complex math more than I was capable of in high school, and I am able to give those examples of knowledge back to my family and community.” Ashley Bell (Northern Arapaho), student in Elementary Algebra.
In this session, participants will experience a small sample of the approach we use in our Algebra classes at Northwest Indian College, followed by a brief presentation about the journey that brought us to this point, and some prospects for the future.

Building Thinking Classroom is a practice most well know for having students working on thinking tasks, in random groups, and at vertical whiteboards. In this session, I will discuss why it is important to think beyond these practices to the closing of the lesson. In particular, I will look at the new research on the three practices that close a thinking classroom lesson—consolidation, meaningful notes, and check-your-understanding questions.
