Making a Better Marketing Team for Math
Saturday October 26, 2024 7:00am - 8:15am PDT
Math needs a better marketing team. As math teachers, how are we marketing math so students want more math? What can we learn from social media to make math more social, exciting, and surprising? Let's talk about these questions in this session!

Is It or Not? Deepening and Democratizing Mathematics through Definitions
Saturday October 26, 2024 8:30am - 9:45am PDT
A distinguishing feature of mathematics as a discipline is its precise use of definitions. Yet, that precision can be anti- democratic; in that it can impede the participation of novices such as our students .We will explore the boundaries between mental image and definition as we play with mathematical precision and determine what-really-is a vehicle, sandwich, or hexagon.

Math Appreciation: Math for Math's Sake
Saturday October 26, 2024 8:30am - 9:45am PDT
High school math prepares us for our careers and everyday life but bears little resemblance to the world of math known to mathematicians – a world of imagination without regard for practical application. To share a taste of this math, I introduced “Math Appreciation” sessions into my classroom where we explore elegant mathematical ideas on topics such as knot theory, symmetry and optical illusions. Attendees of this session will experience a Math Appreciation activity and then hear about what I’ve learned, connections to the curricular competencies, thoughts on fostering a positive relationship with math, and free resources to get started.

Reimagining Fractions: A visual approach for conceptual understanding
Saturday October 26, 2024 8:30am - 9:45am PDT
Join Jen Carter and Susan Robinson from the BC Association of Mathematics Teachers for an exploration of the progression of fraction concepts across grades 3 to 8. We believe that fractions should be taught through a visual approach to help students develop a strong conceptual understanding. This session will engage teachers in hands-on activities and visual provocations that uncover student thinking and common misconceptions. We will be looking at multiple representations of fractions and teacher moves that encourage students to justify their reasoning and strategize their approaches to working with fractions.

Saturday October 26, 2024 8:30am - 9:45am PDT
How do we help students who struggle when overwhelmed with complex science and math tasks? Numeracy requires students to develop the ability, confidence and willingness to make meaning of a variety of text forms and connect the tasks that they are working through to prior knowledge. In this session, we will share teaching tools and explore teacher moves that develop literacy in a mathematical context, teach self-monitoring skills and promote higher-level thinking to increase student success.

Where Mindfulness Meets Curriculum: Financial Literacy for All Learners
Saturday October 26, 2024 8:30am - 9:45am PDT
A recent study found that nearly 50% of GenZ are obsessed with being rich, though most doubt they will ever achieve it. As household debt reaches an all-time high, it’s obvious that we need to rethink how we teach financial literacy to our kids.
Rather than our current focus on how to achieve MORE, we need to change the way we teach financial literacy with a focus on money mindfulness and introducing reflection and awareness towards what’s truly important to YOU. This is how we untangle the complex relationships we have with money including shame, scarcity, and jealousy.

Building and Flying Tetrahedron Kites - where’s the mathematics there!
Saturday October 26, 2024 8:30am - 9:45am PDT
While building tetrahedron kites out of drinking straws, paper ribbons, and tissue paper is fun and colorful, we will not forget to look at the mathematics that might be hidden in them. We can count lengths and perimeter along the edges, see the areas on the faces and touch the volumes built in the kites. And then we will look for, find and discover all of the hidden tetrahedron numbers and find the connection between similar shapes. Why does the volume get to n^3.

While physical classrooms allow for deep connections with students over time, online platforms offer unprecedented reach to inspire millions worldwide. In both, part of the goals of learning math is not just about developing a set of technical skills but building an appreciation and enjoyment for math. In this talk, I want to focus on the lessons I’ve learned from working in social media and how that has evolved my own pedagogical practices in the classroom.

How Cross Cultural Communication and Interhumanism Bridge the Achievement Gap
Saturday October 26, 2024 10:05am - 12:20pm PDT
The U.S. NAEP Data for 2022 showed that there was a decline in math proficiency for students across the nation. Further, millions of students fail to complete school, causing them to drop out of college. Given these findings, educators and leaders must find ways to bridge the achievement gap.  Reports from the National Report Card have shown that there has been a cultural disconnect, with eighty percent of educators being Caucasian, needing support when serving 70 percent of learners of diverse ethnic descents.  There has been a need for engagement in the classroom and a need for teachers to have options for how to bridge the gap.
