ALL WORKSHOPS ARE FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED in person - signing up in Sched does not guarantee you a spot in a session. However, planning your day in Sched really helps us anticipate any potential need to make room changes.

If you create a free account, you can plan and edit your schedule. You may wish to select more than one session in a timeslot as a backup, in case your first choice of session is full.

On the right side of the schedule you can filter by grade band. This will include the sessions which span more than one grade band. You may also wish to view the Schedule as Expanded.

Fibbing, no fibbing! A workshop in Fibonacci poetry
Saturday October 26, 2024 8:30am - 9:45am PDT
In this hands-on math art workshop, we will start by exploring the Fibonacci/ Hemachandra/ bee number sequence and some examples of the beautiful Fib poetry written by Bridges Math and Art poets -- then write our own Fib poems! In the process, we'll discuss the reciprocal ways that mathematical forms can inspire and shape literary arts, and poetic works can spark deeper understandings of mathematics. We'll also talk about our experiences of using creative constraints to make both mathematics and the arts more approachable.

Math Circles
Saturday October 26, 2024 8:30am - 9:45am PDT
Math Circles are for all math enthusiasts who enjoy solving problems and networking with other educators. At an event, teachers share a meal, solve problems, share stories and have a few laughs. Problems are carefully chosen to be accessible for elementary, middle school and secondary teachers so everyone can “get their math on.” Come to the session to find out more about math circles and learn how to set up one of your own.

The Early Primary Mathematical Landscape: Emergent and Inquiry-Led Math
Saturday October 26, 2024 8:30am - 9:45am PDT
Every class has a diverse and unique mathematical landscape. In this workshop, we will discuss how we develop meaningful and dynamic math learning through the use of the natural environment, individual perspectives, shared experiences, and the BC curriculum. We will share strategies for embracing fluid and emergent inquiry-based learning in your classroom and we will highlight ways to harness children's natural curiosities and transform them into meaningful math moments. Join us as we navigate the dynamic world of math, where every classroom holds its own treasure trove of learning opportunities waiting to be discovered!

Grounding Mathematics in Relation to Place
Saturday October 26, 2024 8:30am - 9:45am PDT
This workshop will review and explore a locally-developed framework that supports holistic instruction through hands-on opportunities for teachers and students to build deeper meaning in relation to place.
By thoughtfully designing mathematical approaches and provocations that heighten awareness of the relationships we have with the land, educators can expand on the quantitative computational activities and relationships that the natural world has to offer.
The creation of this framework was made possible by a BCAMT grant that was awarded in the 2022-23 school year.

Cultural Competency: Providing Equitable Math Instruction through Cultural Relevance
Saturday October 26, 2024 10:05am - 11:20am PDT
Scores from the National Assessment of Educational Progress suggest that if current educational practices in math classrooms remain the same, the achievement gap between Caucasians and African descent learners will be eliminated by around 217 years. Teachers must be equipped with methods to conduct equitable instruction that is culturally relevant.

Problem Solving to promote engagement and student learning
Saturday October 26, 2024 10:05am - 11:20am PDT
We all know that problem solving is an important aspect of a mathematics classroom, but do we know why or how to implement problem solving into our lessons. In this workshop, we will look at what research has to say on this topic, and I will share some of my successes in implementing problem solving as a way to engage, motivate and support all learners. Attendees will participate in many of my favourite tasks to experience the "why" and the "how" behind implementing a problem solving lesson.

Spaces of Belonging in Mathematics
Saturday October 26, 2024 10:05am - 11:20am PDT
What does it mean to belong in mathematics? Who belongs and why? These are important questions to consider when thinking about both our classrooms and our own relations towards mathematics as educators. This active discussion-based workshop will offer space for exploring how we perceive a sense of belonging in mathematics and how it can influence our decisions as teachers. Some preliminary results from exploring this topic with pre-service elementary teachers will be shared and examples of inclusive classroom design will be discussed. Come prepared to share about your views on belonging in mathematics!

Centering Indigenous Perspectives, Worldviews, and Pedagogies in Mathematics Education
Saturday October 26, 2024 11:45am - 12:45pm PDT
(Re)generating Learning for Indigenous Futurism

This presentation introduces the work and projects of the Indigenous Math Education Network. Teachers from different contexts (urban and rural; K-12) and perspectives (Indigenous and non-Indigenous; students, teachers, and administrators) share their stories of grounding Indigenous pedagogies, perspectives and ways of knowing in their practices. Through sharing and discussion, we extend these possibilities to explore how Indigenous perspectives have teachings to offer mathematics education so that all, Indigenous and non-Indigenous students, human and non-humans, can truly flourish.
