Moving Towards Data Science
Friday October 25, 2024 8:30am - 9:45am PDT
Are you interested in building data literacy with your students? In this session, we will engage in a Data Talk and learn how to implement this collaborative activity as a warm-up for any mathematics class. These data discussions ignite students’ curiosity, prompt them to ask questions about the world around them, and help decolonize the classroom by decentering the teacher as the sole source of knowledge. Experiences and resources will also be shared about how a Data Science 12 course was locally developed and how these Data Talks form the basis of that curriculum.

STEM Learning through the use of Problem Based Challenges – taking the thinking classroom to the next level
Friday October 25, 2024 10:05am - 11:20am PDT
This session explores the topic of STEM and how it applies to the modern classroom. This session will offer a new take on traditional teaching and transforms the teacher’s and learners’ roles by integrating imagination, creativity, and teamwork into solving real world. Assessment methods and examples are also offered to help teachers with the Ministry of Education's 'new assessment' model. This session will engage in a way that intersects ideology and diversity, and opportunities to engage with the various communities and their environments without the need and reliance on equipment and funding. For student teachers or beginning/new teachers.

Hearing, Feeling, and Tasting Data
Friday October 25, 2024 12:00pm - 1:15pm PDT
As we are inundated with more and more data in our daily lives, how we process it will become increasingly important. Our bodies are designed to absorb information in many ways beyond just sight, so why not “see” data with more than just our eyes. Using multi-senses to analyze and interpret data can make more meaningful and powerful connections for students. This workshop will look at how we can feel, taste and listen to data, as well as just see it.

Holistic Teaching: Nurturing Teachers and Empowering Students
Friday October 25, 2024 1:35pm - 2:50pm PDT
Join us for an engaging discussion and practical strategies to discover how to holistically adjust Math instruction to meet students and teachers' needs. Drawing on neuroscience-based techniques and proficiency scales for differentiation, participants will gain insights into structuring instruction, fostering a growth mindset, and creating supportive learning environments for students. We also aim to provide a shared learning space where we all help each other learn and grow to help every student reach their full potential while allowing us to dedicate more time to our holistic wellness.

Bridging the Gap: Math for Social Justice
Saturday October 26, 2024 8:30am - 9:45am PDT
Join us for a workshop where we share our students' experiences with a project that explores the gender and racial wage gaps using real data. The project combines social justice learning with mathematical analysis, allowing students to see themselves and their own identities in the data and critically examine the impacts of intersectionality. Through applying systems of linear equations, students model, interpret, and predict the future of wage equity in Canada. Targeted at the Foundations of Mathematics and Precalculus 10 curriculum, this project is adaptable for other grade levels.
