The Changing Landscape in Teaching Statistics: Using Dynamic Applets to Develop Statistical Thinking
Friday October 25, 2024 10:05am - 11:20am PDT
How can we help students make sense of important statistical concepts like margin of error, confidence level, P-value, and statistical significance? Freely-available, mobile-friendly applets promote student engagement and encourage statistical reasoning. In this session, we’ll examine: a collaborative activity applet, a probability applet, two data analysis applets that offer simulation-based and traditional inference methods, a confidence level concept exploration applet, and a simulation applet for estimating a P-value and determining statistical significance in a randomized experiment. Suggestions for classroom use will be provided.

Concurrent Pre-Calculus 12/Calculus 12: Rewards, Challenges, and Tasks
Friday October 25, 2024 12:00pm - 1:15pm PDT
"In the first portion of this workshop, I will share my experience teaching a small cohort of students both Pre-Calculus 12 and Calculus 12 concurrently in a linear track. I will share the sequence of topics that supported students in learning functions as well as differentiation and integration.

In the second portion, I will share tasks and assessments from both courses with some opportunity for participants to engage in selected tasks. Examples of student work will also be shared."

A Landscape for Learning Calculus
Friday October 25, 2024 1:35pm - 2:50pm PDT
Do you ever get tired of having to adapt university textbooks for use in your high school Calculus classes? We did, so we created our own, and now you can benefit from our experience! We partnered with a BC publisher to create worktexts for the BC Calculus 12 and AP Calculus AB & BC curricula. Please join lead author, Dr. Bruce McAskill, as he takes you through the author’s journey of developing these worktexts. The workshop will focus on how the worktext aligns with the different curricula and at the features of the online teacher guides, quizzes, and solutions.

Where Mindfulness Meets Curriculum: Financial Literacy for All Learners
Saturday October 26, 2024 8:30am - 9:45am PDT
A recent study found that nearly 50% of GenZ are obsessed with being rich, though most doubt they will ever achieve it. As household debt reaches an all-time high, it’s obvious that we need to rethink how we teach financial literacy to our kids.
Rather than our current focus on how to achieve MORE, we need to change the way we teach financial literacy with a focus on money mindfulness and introducing reflection and awareness towards what’s truly important to YOU. This is how we untangle the complex relationships we have with money including shame, scarcity, and jealousy.

Appreciating Math in the Social Media Era
Saturday October 26, 2024 10:05am - 11:20am PDT
Social Media can be a powerful tool to discover and build an appreciation for your passions. As a math professor and YouTuber, I teach math in very different contexts. While physical classrooms allow for deep connections with students over time, online platforms offer unprecedented reach to inspire millions worldwide. In both, part of the goals of learning math is not just about developing a set of technical skills but building an appreciation and enjoyment for math. In this talk, I want to focus on the lessons I’ve learned from working in social media and how that has evolved my own pedagogical practices in the classroom.
