Making Meaning of Fractions and Geometry in 3rd - 5th Grade with Virtual Manipulatives

In this session, designed for 3rd-5th grade teachers, participants will explore lesson ideas, class openers and warm-up routines, and exploratory spaces that will engage students in thinking deeply about fractions and geometry. Participants will leave the session with the skills and knowledge to use these activities with their students, as well as the ability to immediately author their own activities using virtual manipulatives. The session will use the free virtual manipulatives and tools available on Polypad, part of Desmos Classroom.

Come learn some new class openers, games, and puzzles to spark student engagement. Participants will play a variety of quick activities to see how these help promote numeracy skills, algebraic thinking, and geometric understanding. Some of the activities shared will be able to be played both virtually and with physical objects, while some of them are best suited to be played with the free virtual manipulatives on Polypad, part of Desmos Classroom.
