We will look at what Number Talks is, how we can easily integrate it into our math class, discuss small tweaks to improve assessment, and extend the routine as we put students in the driver’s seat. Come ready to participate in a variety of whole group games that cover the concepts of probability, place value, basic computation, problem solving strategies and much more. Leave with resources you can immediately use in your classroom. All materials are easy to find and will be in most classrooms already. These games are classroom tested and you and your students will love them as much as we do. 

When what we do in the classroom doesn’t feel like it is working, we often revert back to how we were taught: giving hints, showing how to do the work/solve the problem, etc. While this comes from the best of intentions and might feel like learning is happening what often occurs is a cycle of less and less empowerment, identity and agency for our students (and teachers). We propose shifts that support students thinking and sharing ideas and teachers shifting to a mediator of student thinking. 

Join Jen Carter and Susan Robinson from the BC Association of Mathematics Teachers for an exploration of the progression of fraction concepts across grades 3 to 8. We believe that fractions should be taught through a visual approach to help students develop a strong conceptual understanding. This session will engage teachers in hands-on activities and visual provocations that uncover student thinking and common misconceptions. We will be looking at multiple representations of fractions and teacher moves that encourage students to justify their reasoning and strategize their approaches to working with fractions.
